What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an effective form of health care that has evolved into a complete and holistic medical system. It is an essential part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Practitioners of Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have used this medical system for thousands of years to diagnose and help millions of people become well and stay well. An Acupuncturist will place very fine, sterile needles at specific sites on the body. This promotes natural healing by enhancing recuperative power, immunity, physical and emotional health and improves overall function and well-being. It is a safe, painless, and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.

How safe is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is extremely safe. It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy, yielding no side effects except feelings of relaxation and well being. Only sterile, single-use disposable needles are used.

Do the needles hurt?
Acupuncture needles are tiny, hair fine, unlike injection needles. The sensation caused by an acupuncture needle varies. Most people feel no pain at all. Some people might have such sensations as heaviness, soreness, numbness and distention, Some people might feel a little tingling as the needles are inserted. All the sensations are normal needling sensations.

How deep do they go?
The depth of the insertion varies. It depends on specific locations and acupoints. Typically, needles are inserted at depths ranging between 1/8" to 1.5" deep.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments will vary from person to person. Some people experience immediate relief; others may take months, even longer to achieve results. Chronic conditions usually take longer to resolve than acute ones. Plan on a minimum of a month to see significant changes, Treatment frequency depends on a variety of factors: the severity and duration of the problem., the quality and quantity of Qi, etc. An acupuncturist may suggest from one to two treatments a week or monthly visits for health maintenance, seasonal “tune ups” or prevention. Generally one course of treatment consists of 7-10 treatments.

How does acupuncture work?
Needling the acupoints can influence the meridians (channels) by unblocking the obstructions and re-establishing a healthy flow through the meridians. Since the meridians link with the organs, the treatment can therefore also help improve the functions of the internal organs. The improved energy flow and biochemical balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural healing abilities and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.

What can I expect?
During the initial exam a full health history will be taken. Questions will be asked regarding symptoms and health An acupuncturist may check the pulse, the tongue, and conduct an appropriate physical exam. The information is then organized to create a complete, comprehensive and accurate diagnosis. After the interview process you may receive an acupuncture treatment. Visits range rom 30- 90 minutes.

What should I expect during treatment?
Where the acupuncture needle has been inserted, you may experience a vague numbness, heaviness, tingling or dull ache. Sometimes people experience a sensation of energy spreading and moving around the needle. This is called the “Qi” sensation. All these reactions are a good sign that the treatment is working. Afterwards you may feel energized or a deep sense of relaxation and well-being.
